They were pigeon-holed into areas of commerce that were "beneath" gentiles and the other things you list, education, family and an almost inhumane pragmatic view of the world and their place in it, has allowed them to be more successful as a group than their small numbers would indicate was possible. To the less intellectual among us that pragmatism looks suspicious...and therefore leads to mistrust and eventually hate. It is why they are reported by many to be in control of everything despite their miniscule numbers and wielding influence far in excess of their numbers.
