I don't think they fully understand the history of how the US helped this Ukraine war along, with the 2014 coup, expansion of NATO and offering Ukraine entrance into NATO. This was a big threat to Russia. So we have had a lot of influence in Russia's actions and so has Ukraine themselves with politics and military actions against the pro-Russian territories of Ukraine.
So these boomers have a deep historical understanding of Russia, but have just completely lost track of what's going on starting in 2014?
quote:
I suspect it is old Russian sentiment from the USSR days. They are used to us being involved around the world for democracy and keeping Russia from expanding.
They've seen Russia take Georgia and Crimea and see Ukraine as being the next step as Russia will move westward after Ukraine.
And maybe you young folk can't see that Russia (really Putin) is every bit as aggressive as the old Soviet Union but just don't have the power they had back then. And why don't they have the firepower? Because the US stood in their way.
And all the Putin's "not that bad" crowd just seems to sweep the various assassinations he has conducted while in power. He is a despot, and despots cannot be trusted.

I’m 62. Center-right conservative.
Don’t really give a rip about Ukraine.
If we have essentially obsolete (yet still functioning) weapons, then send them to Ukraine.
Anything else, NATO needs to step up. We can’t be the top funder of Ukraines defense. We’re already paying salaries and benefits for tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens, it has to stop.
