We had a bunch of chimney swifts nest in our chimney. They are all gone, but I think the nests are still there.

Is this a fire risk? Do I need to have those cleaned out before winter?

Any help appreciated.

If you had Chimney Swifts, they build mud nest. No fire danger.

Install a screen to keep them from using your chimney.

“Chimney swifts,they make mud nests”

That’s wrong. My grandparents always had chimney swifts as their chimney didn’t have a screen.
I remember when a nest would fall into the fireplace occasionally late summer.
It would be a jillion twigs glued together with a sticky saliva they produced.

Japanese boil the nests for soup, bird nest soup.Strain twigs out and eat the broth.Read it is very expensive. Sounds gross to me.

The mud nests are Cliff Swallows, have seen lots of them under bridges and overpasses.

LSUA 75 --- Thanks for correcting my information about the nest material. I always thought there nest were the same as barn swallows.
