There is something to be said for deer getting used to human scent. I grew up hunting in what is essentially rural suburbs and those deer smelled people all the time. They wouldn’t necessarily bolt if they winded you, but their head would be on a swivel and would pick out the slightest movement as they continued doing whatever they were doing. Contrast that with a property in Natchez I hunt, the caretaker is the only person to step on 2300 acres outside of the season. You can ride down the side of a field in a sxs and they will barely lift their heads to look at you go by. At a feeder or in a plot they’re relaxed as they can be. If they catch even the slightest bit of human smell, it’s like they got hit with a cattle prod and blow for 10 miles.

Was taking care of my dad awhile and decided to go sit in a ground blind my brother had thrown behind their house, maybe 5-6 wooded acres surrounded by houses and yards. At 425 the neighbors Doberman comes barreling into the woods and runs all the squirrels eating the corn up the tree. Texted him a pic of the dog front feet on a tree barking and he just replied “they’ll be there at 430”. The dog stomps off and at 431 here come 7 does. After 15 mins the dog comes running back barking at them, out the right side of the blind I can see them half heartedly flag and trot about 40 yards, stop, and turn back to look. Soon as the dog left, they went right back to the corn and ate til dark.
