It was guilt related to colonialization. Europe gave up most of its colonies after WW2.

The Holocaust was a different variable.

Regarding colonialism, it's always convenient who they think is the rightful inhabitant of a place.

Most patches of ground on Earth have been inhabited by different people over thousands of years and even over the last hundred years.

Israel is no different. It's been inhabited by Jews, Christians, Muslims; held my multiple countries and groups (including the UN).

Naming a starting point and saying: "These people are entitled to this land" is dishonest. And to claim colonialism, you have to do that.
