Can someone educated on the subject tell me exactly what the thought process is behind this?

They launch missiles into Israel, killing nearly 1000 people, and now they are mad they may be getting invaded?

If the above is true, what exactly was their expectation?

You're making the mistake a lot of upper-middle class Progressives do: you think these people think like you do.

They were mad and hateful before the attack. They wanted to kill Israelis. They have done so. When Israel responds, their main hope is to be alive when Israeli boots hit their vicinity, so they have a chance to kill more Israelis. If they can take one out with a suicide bomb vs laying down their weapon to survive, they will take the bomb route.
Their hatred and desire to kill Israelis wasn't pacified by the decades of peace they've had recently, it won't be if the Israelis hold back and don't retaliate.

That's not a praise or a condemnation, simply an observation.

Whoever downvoted me misses the point I am making:
they do not share the same perspective or point of view you do. Their goal is fueled by hatred and the desire to kill, and that's what they are doing. A punitive response by Israel isn't going to make them change their minds, it simply thins out their numbers. A lack of response won't change their minds, it will simply allow them to continue on with their plans of attack.
