US subs aren't running around with sonar going. Gives your position away. The quietest spot in the water is probably our sub.

Understood. What would they do in hostile Chinese waters? Run even more quiet. I’m making a wild guess this trap was set in shallow water, near a naval port. Setting them in the open ocean would be very hit and miss and a waste of resources.

Perhaps it was near one of those islands they’ve built in the South China Sea. I don’t know for sure just speculation.
