Definitely one of the best TV shows ever made. Maybe even the best. Just a phenomenal work on every level.
The last season unfortunately, treated the media with kid gloves, even romanced the notion of the common man reporter. I wish they had taken a harder look at it, and exposed more of the rot and corruption in journalism too.
But even the last season of the Wire is still better than 98% of other TV shows out there.
quote:Caution mild spoilers… I enjoyed the last season the first time around. But I have become a little jaded about it. The brilliance of The Wire is its unflinchingly look into the workings of a city - crime, police, politics, corruption, education. They pulled no punches and exposed the worst while still showing people trying to do good things in bad situations.
Don’t bother with the last season

Thew newspaper arc pretty much reflects the same as the police. A few noble characters are crushed by the system while incompetent and/or corrupt individuals thrive.
The 5th season is best when youtube feeds me a few clips.
