There isn't an employed coach on the planet who would bench a 1st team all state player who didn't give him an extreme reason to.

My son was far from benched, he was the leading scorer and the reason they won State…he just had to do so at left forward instead of from center midfield. It wasn’t the style of soccer he liked though…he could generate tons of space for himself playing in the middle and rip the long shots he was so good at. At left forward it was a fight, someone is always on you and you’re never getting shots outside of the box. He did it very well and scored first in most every game, racked up tons of assists as well. Just never wanted to cleat up in that sport again.

By your account he was the best player on the team at any position:

Absolutely insane reasoning for my son having to give up his position…because my son would be better at the other position than the kid in his spot…no shite, he’d be better at every other position…shouldn’t mean he gives up the one he’s the best in state at. Glad he quit.

There may be more to this than what was said, but if your son playing left forward covered an otherwise weaker position compared to the drop off playing in the center by his replacement there, why wouldn't the coach do that? It seems logical, and your son was still a starter.

Pahahaha sounds like the coach put him at the best position possible for him. If he’s a scorer, he needs to be at the front. Center mid is about facilitating and getting the ball to the scorer then assisting on D. It’s not full on out attack mode at center mid. Obviously there was a better conductor on the team than your son.

ETA: it’s also common place for position changes based on teams. I was a right winger for select and ODP but a 9 in high school because we had no true 9 on the team
