They have a golden opportunity to retcon the sequel trilogy.
It's a stretch, but....
What if the journey to another galaxy takes more time than they realize (Like how in the movie Interstellar, he's gone for a few months, but because of time-space/science, it ends up being decades)
So is it possible, that Thrawn does arrive, but arrives after the events of the crap sequel trilogy?
I doubt Kennedy/Disney would allow it, but it's a thought.

They really painted themselves into a corner with Rey storyline. It appears dumb to have jumped the timeline that far forward, especially with what is unfolding now.
The Mando and Ahsoka stories are really giving fans what they wanted and Filoni nailed it with this last episode. This episode really brought it back full circle to 1977. The original trilogy was supposed to be a tale we were hearing from "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away", yet they have their own. There is so much they can build off of, they need to figure out out make the last 3 theatrical movies go irrelevant. They can exist, just they are not a center piece. Let the numbering die, no Episode X. Something new. There is more to Star Wars than Skywalkers and Palpatines.
The Thrawn intro was one of the best in Star Wars ever.
