This is just the new way of advertising and takes advantage of human tendency to lack critical thinking in groups.
Defend Texas Liberty, a Texas campaign PAC funded largely by oil and gas millionaires Tim Dunn and Faris Wilks was paying 50 bucks a tweet for anything pro Paxton leading up to and during the trial.
Look at Loomer's craziness for example. If some rando walked up and tried to sell you on that babbling nonsense, you'd dismiss them out of hand. On here though, there's some folks who back it (either because they're trolling, paid, or actively insane), but it's a similar concept.

After watching Telemarketers, I can’t help but think that a handful of those useless CDG callers ended up seeing their jobs “evolve” into paid message board trolls. Gotta think there’s at least a few here. And likely a small army’s worth in the cesspool known as r/politics
