Only jaguars have the black pigment gene. Not a panther which is a separate species.

Not true at all. Jaguars and leopards both can be melanistic. As can all the other species belonging to the Panthera genus like lions.

True. One odd thing about this debate I've always found kinda funny is both jaguars and leopards (along with lions and tigers) are in the "Panthera" genus. While actual panthers (mountain lion, cougar, etc) are in the "Puma" genus.
