One of the things the Big Short does so incredibly well is explaining difficult concepts. The cut scenes with Margot Robbie in a bubble bath and Anthony Bourdain explaining bundling mortgages as akin to fish stew are legitimately genius.

One of my favorite scenes is when Carell finds out the stripper has 5 mortgages. “There’s a bubble!!!” Lol

I think the CDO scene is the best explanation for laymen.

Inside Job does a fantastic job of explaining the crisis in a more detailed format, but the Big Short is great at how it is able to serve as a mainstream movie for a large audience, when you consider it’s subject.
It’s one of the most impressive feats of filmmaking of the past couple of decades.
The Social Network is also successful with this, but it’s actually easier source material.
