The fact that this country isn’t 100% nuclear is just idiotic on every single level.

I don't disagree with you but whose backyard do we put the spent fuel rods? All power generation has a downside of some type.
Coal - strip mining
Nuclear - fuel rods
Wind - Government drones get clobbered
Solar - too hot to live in that much sun.

Even if we went nuclear we wouldn't invest in additional capacity unless it was profitable for the power company.
The source of the power isn't the issue when supply runs short.
