Offensive Line and down and distance has hurt LSU

2 things that I think have been an achilles heel and have been LSU shooting itself in the foot are the play of the offensive line and LSU putting itself in unfavorable down and distance situations. How many times especially in recent games have we come out with Charles Scott up the middle on 1st and 2nd and 10's only for him to get stuffed for no gains or 1-2 yard gains. The O-Line hasn't blocked well for Scott and the other backs and Lee has been faced with the pressure of often facing 3rd and longs, which are low percentage plays and usually lead to us going 3 and out. The offensive line has been a disappointment this year, but hopefully next year and the rest of this year it will be better. It seems like Helms has struggled with some massive nose tackles and that Barksdale has had a pretty good number of false start penalties.

Not as many as the times we try a pass on 1st down, which usually fails leaving us with 2nd and 10, which we then follow up with 2 draws and punt.

yes, passing incomplete on 1st and 10 and getting stuffed on runs on 2nd and 10 put us in the hole for sure.

Acually, what concerne me FAR more is our repeated ability to turn 2nd and short into 3rd and long or 4th and short. And it ain't the line. It's the playcalling.
And for this team and the playcallers, 3 yards has become a long yardage situation.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The reason the offense is ending up third & long so often is because opposing defenses are stacking the line with 8 & 9 players due our QBs inability to through the ball. The line can't block that many people. Every teams goal is to shut the run down and force LSU to throw the ball because bad things happen when they do.

If we are in a spread formation and they load the box someone has to be uncovered. We have at times gotten second and short and then we get a penalty to take it to 2nd and long. If they don't start running some sort of power game then the passes will never open up either. Its a catch 22, but the spread is supposed to help eliminate defenses from loading up on the line.
If LSU cannot do this with the personel they have out there, then go with a two tight end, two back power I and go at it.
Then maybe some play action might actually work.
LSU did use a two back and went away from it. WhY? I dunno.

We don't run the spread offense. We run something comparable to it, but not the spread. We do get penalties, but no more than any other team. The bottom line is we can't throw the ball so teams stack the line of scrimmage...period.

yes they do use the spread, when they are in 4 or 5 wide receiver sets.
