You don't need an uber expensive guitar to start, but getting the absolute bottom of the barrel guitar will also likely hinder your progress. I do not agree with those that said no lessons are required. If I could go back and get a teacher show me some of the things that took me years to discover on my own, I absolutely would. Once you get your bearings and are able to actually play a bit, it may no longer be required, but a good guitar teacher can help you in ways that online lessons cannot (tips, proper technique, etc).
