Grew up near butte la rose did my fair share of swiming/fishing as a kid and teen in those canals/bayous off the atchafalaya. Saw gators all the time they never bothered us. As the lady stated had a few times in the boat where a head would pop out a few feet from the boat but that was about it. I think they were just curious. I guess gators have plenty to eat down there so they just leave the humans alone.
