Plus the city has no zoning no laws on private property.

And this I find really weird. The neighborhood we stay in has a mix of really high-end mansions and dilapidated 50 year old ranch houses some not occupied right next door in some cases.

Just across the street are a couple of old clap-board houses that are occupied but look abandoned - grass not cut, etc. - with a lot in between them that is the home to at least 50 all-white feral cats that some idiots keep feeding. There's a grid of at least 50 bowls in the lot and sometimes there's a cat at each one. It's just like some Stephen King movie. They all stare at us. Sometimes some of them start coming our way.

The cats freak my wife out especially at night when they are most active. I think it's funny. She makes me go open the door to the house and scurries frantically from our vehicle to the house after she checks to ensure no cats are heading our way. It IS kinda' creepy though, but I can't help but get a chuckle the way it freaks her out.

That’s pretty common here because of the crazy growth the city has seen. I have bungalows on both sides of me.

Sounds like Braeswood/Braesheights/Meyerland. Those vacant houses are ones that flooded during Harvey and were either foreclosed or still awaiting govt grants to raise the property 7 ft above flood plain. Lots of bayous run thru the are. Meyerland has legit ghetto apartments spotted around but the braeswood areas are mostly middle to upper middle class.
