I will say I’m sure the GPS is built into the green fee, but now that every golf group has a range finder, it just seemed like an unnecessary expense that’s passed onto the player.
It isn't about the distances for players. It is about having an AI Marshall. Track times players are playing and keep them off green surrounds and on paths for cart path only.

Still think it’s an unnecessary cost that’ll be passed to the consumer

Agreed. The lack of golf etiquette across the region is staggering. I’m all for supporting anything to help curb that which should enhance player experience. Nothing worse than seeing people driving near tee boxes, 15ft from around the green, and taking 4 tee shots then stopping to admire their skills after every shot.

Absolutely correct, and to protect the investment since the carts will auto shut off if you get to close to the greens, which everyone use to do before we had the GPS carts. The distance also is nice to have front, center, and back, but it was not intended to be something to give exact yardage to the pin, thus rangefinder in everyone's bag. But I promise you thag if you forget your rangefinder, you will be be happy we have the GPS
