I've heard downtown Orlando is sketchy.
Orlando is just like every other "Downtown" in the USA.
There are good areas and bad areas.
I'd take my chances in downtown Orlando over New Orleans or Baton Rouge any day of the week though, just stay in the "Good" areas where there are people around, be aware of your surroundings, watch your back and nothing will happen to you........

Downtown Orlando has a ton of bars and restaurants, and it's overall pretty safe. Lots of stuff on South Orange, Church St, Wall St, E Central, Pine St, etc.
The area around the stadium is definitely suspect though.
Park Ave. in Winter Park has some really nice restaurants/shops as well.
