You sure it wasn't because Wagner (the only Russian force with any competence) isn't there anymore.
I'm just looking at the casualty count. Ukraine has lost between 300 - 350 thousand men. Estimates of Russian losses, are I've heard between 25 to 50 thousand. You do the math.
If I compare the map of Ukraine at the beginning of the war with the map now, All I see now in the disputed areas (Donbas, Bakhmut) in Eastern Ukraine is red. I don't see large blotches of regained blue Ukraine territory, only red.
But I did read reports that Ukraine has committed a 35 thousand-man unit of American-trained and equipped Ukranians. We'll see how that turns out.
But right now, from what I've been able to gather from reports, the Ukrainians got mauled pretty bad.
The ball is in Biden's corner. We'll see what Potatus does.

So the area around kyiv, kharkiv, and kherson aren't huge areas of regained Ukraine territory from the first counteroffensive?

Can you please provide a link? I haven’t seen any figures corroborating your casualty count for either side. Are we talking casualties or KIAs?
