I couldn't have said it better myself. The thing that got to me the most is that the family never really stood a chance. It was all planned by the grandmother and her cult. The family was manipulated into fulfilling the bargain with the demon. The little girl had to die so that the demon could have a male host body. Remember the weird letter that Toni Collette's character found from her mother? It basically said that all of the suffering she would have to endure would be worth it in the end.

She put on a master class in acting. No doubt her finest work and she deserved the Academy Award for her performance. I have seen first hand the reaction of a parent who lost a child. They became unhinged in their grief. She captured the raw emotion perfectly.
