I can't speak to how he was with the Mets, but with the Cardinals he was one of the toughest outs with the game on the line. He could work any lefty pitcher for walks and flares to left field. A line drive machine. Then there was his defense.

I've never before or since seen a 1st baseman who would charge so hard in bunt situations he could field bunts on the 3rd base side of the mound. Absolutely fearless. He was also so great at positioning to catch pick-off attempts (crouching in foul territory with his glove inches above the bag), MLB changed the rules after complaints from Davey Johnson to force him to be inside the lines. (All he did was position his body down the right field line).

By any metric he was a winner, but his overall stats are probably just a little bit shy.
