I just think there are more casual sport fans who will tune into USC vs Ohio State or Texas vs Alabama than 4th generation Oregon State families who refuse to watch out of spite which is ultimately what TV is betting on

i think it's the exact opposite.

I'm not a big nfl fan. I do'nt tune in just b/c the cowboys are playing the giants. I'll tune in on a sunday night b/c i'm home and have nothign else to do now that the weekend is over, but i'm doing something at noon and 3, and i'm not going to sit inside to watch an nfl game in my spare time.

The Oregon State fan is who is going to tune into the big USC-OSU game. The entire SEC, and probably half of the rest of the country is going to watch Ole Miss-Bama if Ole Miss is winning at halftime. An LSU fan is going to watch Penn St Michigan at 3 while they tailgate.
Casual sports fan in New York or LA could give two shits about any of that.
You either watch college football or you don't. The casual fan in regards to watching the big USC/OSU, or LSU/Bama, or Tex/UF, are the fans of other schools that are either interested in the outcome b/c it affects their school, or they simply enjoy good college football atmospheres. backwards hat tatted up bronx guy isn't casually watching a college football game just b/c he wants to see the white out as Penn State tries to beat a top 5 Michigan team. Other college football fans watch it b/c they love the white out, and they love hearing how loud a stadium can get for a big time matchup.

In 2018 Purdue boat races a stunned Ohio State team in a prime time game. That place was jumping that night and it was the talk of the college football world.

But Purdue can't hold their weight.

CFB needs the teams like Purdue. It's what makes it special.
