My grandpa was in the 101st and we don't know much about his service other than he was at Bastogne and the Eagles Nest.
Each unit pretty much kept day to day records and filled out after action reviews during their campaigns. Those may be available for your grandfathers unit.
You NEED to get his records and find out what unit he was in. It will be on his DD-214 form as will most of the information you are looking for including awards and qualifications.
Once you have his unit, you’re halfway there. I’ve read a good portion of what’s printed about those airborne guys in the European theater. They were just brave as hell.
I was in the army with a guy named Houtkooper. He was from the Netherlands and he had heard so many stories about the bravery of the American Paratroopers, onece he got out of college, he joined the US Army to become Airborne Infantry. He wanted to earn the title of the men he’d heard so much about. The guy had a masters degree in physics, he was a little out of place but he was a good soldier.

He was in the Signal Corps. I think most of his records were in the part of the archives that burnt. My mom has a scrapbook with everything she knows in it, I need to read through it again next time I visit
