I think a lot of today's records/data are suspect. Take Phoenix for example. It's official temperature is taken at Sky Harbor airport, which lies in the middle of an ever expanding city sitting on the desert floor. With each passing year, the edges of metro-Phoenix creep further into the desert, replacing desert landscape with asphalt roads and tiles, concrete and other heat sinks. A temperature taken at Sky Harbor today versus 50 years ago means something different where "climate" is concerned than is being assumed.
