Studies show that's most efficient for flow of traffic but unfortunately US drivers don't know how to share the road and zipper merge. Instead they get pushed and jockey for position. Think about it, is it better t9 have essentially an extra half mile of closed lane or use the 2 lanes as long as possible? (I used to be irritated to until I read a book that talked about how much more efficient it is to merge late and saw it work very well in Germany over the years)
