But what if teams determine it’s not in their best interest to pay running backs and simply draft younger ones with fresher legs?

I agree it sucks for them but it seems kinda silly to pay a guy who could very well be a depreciating asset in their mid 20s when they can get a guy who is arguably more explosive/better for a fraction of the cost in the draft.

I get that, which is why the running back rookie scale should be higher than other positions because, outside of a few outliers, that first contract for them will likely be their biggest and longest.
