Believe it or not people just weren’t nearly as mobile. The transient lifestyle people enjoy today was basically unheard of in past generations.
I’m not saying migration and even mass migration didn’t exist. People just didn’t go backs and forth with regularity. For generations the majority of people didn’t move far from where they were born. Louisiana is a great example of this. It’s one of the least transient states meaning not many people leave and not many people relocate there.
