you are certainly welcome to have your own opinion, but I do not see the current usage of this term in politics as being consistent with the film from which the term arises.

No one is trying to make anyone else believe that they are insane. They are simply misleading people for political purposes. That is a different animal, IMO.

politicians (and arguably some in the media) are certainly misleading the public in any number of ways. They are not “gaslighting.”

Plenty of evidence to support my opinion, so thank you for letting me have mine. You're so generous.

Not the criterion.
Gaslighting is duplicitous manipulation by perps to sow self-doubt in targets. Classically, it is an actor for one side behaving horribly under pretense of playing for the opposition team.

That certainly could include targets thinking they might be crazy. Glenn Youngkin followers without a racist bone in their body seeing a group of Tiki Torch "racists" claim to be part of the Youngkin election effort, might suddenly think they'd been insane for supporting Youngkin in the first place.

In reality the TikiTorch brigade were neither racists, nor Younkin supporters. They were Democrat actors. The TikiTorch BS was a failed gaslight.
