There’s a little more to it, but basically during the French and Indian war the Acadians (French born and descendants) wouldn’t swear to the British crown so they were kicked out of the Northeast. When England took parts of France they deported the Acadians. Other Acadians went to “New France” (Canada).

I've read about the LSU stuff in the past, but I don't have sources in front of me. The LA gov discrimination is well documented, especially measures that were taken by the public school systems to stamp out Cajun culture. Students who had never spoken English in their lives had French literally beaten out of them. The CODOFIL movement came along specifically to address this.
