6th best defense in the NBA last season.

Fools gold shell, if you think that Pels paint and PnR play (winning numbers) had significant influence on that rating. Coach Green and Collins had Pels playing really good team defense with heavy switching, but a deeper dive into paint numbers like opponents FG% show where Pels weaknesses lies. When Val plays he provides interior presence but teams target him by bringing him out to the perimeter and exploiting his slow feet. This is why Coach Green used Nance so much at the pivot. Problem with Nance is that he’s an undersized pivot and usually paired him with an undersized 4. It was easy money to post and crash the boards, particularly at high leverage moments. Sort of like a good boxer with a suspect midsection … Looks great against also rans, but against other good boxers they wear down from body blows and eventually get got.

Chiming in to say the obvious…but a healthy Zion fixes a lot of these issues. If nothing else he allows the team to build large leads, and then opponents rely on the 3 ball instead of hunting JV in the PnR.

Fools gold shell

A metric used over 82 games isn't fools gold. If the pels kept the roster the same and improved rim protection we'd have the best defense in the league.

You seem to forget a lot of our defense went from elite to average when Dyson and yep, I'll say it, Zion went down.

The only true negative defender we have that plays heavy minutes is Trey. CJ isn't great but he's serviceable.
