Les inherited an LSU program where the expectation level was as high as it had been in decades...maybe ever (at that time). He maintained that level of success for over a decade. Hell, one could make the argument he was as good, if not better than Saban in his first 3 seasons at LSU. LSU went 9-3 in the final season under Saban. Les went 10-1, 10-2, 10-2 (National Champion).
The downfall for Les was his stubbornness. He changed his overall approach following the 2008 season and refused to change it again as the way the game was played progressed. I have no doubt that stubbornness left at least 2-3 more national championship opportunities on the table.
The "vacating" of wins is irrelevant and a joke. No matter how much the NCAA wants to, you can't rewrite history. We all saw those wins take place.
Saban woke up the sleeping giant and set the foundation for what has become one of the best programs in America. But given Saban was here for only 5 years, it's hard to argue Les isn't objectively the most successful HC in LSU history. Subjectively I think Saban and Kelly are better HCs (and their careers including other stops bear that out). I also think Kelly has an opportunity to surpass Les in terms of success at LSU.
