Paul Mainieri had a great run here. He has generated some complicated feelings because of few things that happened here. His flirtation with Texas rubbed fans the wrong way. His comments postmortem on the relative struggles during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. His period hiring underqualified coaches.

I think for me, I am proud of what he accomplished here. Everyone has a complicated history with what they do. I also think that at the end of his tenure, his personal losses and his injury made it difficult for him to sustain the energy level needed at LSU. It was heartwarming to see him make a run in 2021 as a last hurrah. I was surprised to see him flirt with Miami. I was equally surprised to see Miami go another direction (I have no idea if it was because Paul pulled out of consideration or not). As time melts away, I'll remember the amazing winning streak, the 2009 title, and the six straight national seeds. The other stuff will likely be left to the dustbin of history.
