The whole DC/NVa metro area is filled with people living off the government teet. I'm not surprised at that at all. They believe in big government.

Get away from those areas and the people are very different, more akin to folks from Tennessee or SW Virginia. There are plenty of rednecks between Philly and Pittsburg, Confederate flags too.

The mid-Atlantic states are not the north east and all those cities have good and bad areas, but people in general are not as openly friendly as they are in the South. The area north of Boston is quite pretty and Maine is very cool, so are Quebec and the Maritime provinces.
