787 fuselage is CF and that decision caused a lot of controversy at the time for exactly the same reasons. Failure modes, especially cyclic fatigue, not only differ from aluminum but are not as well understood. Inspection techniques differ also as you cannot inspect CF with standard ultrasonic technology.
