I have a little Fenix pocket sized LED, that runs on a rechargeable battery, but can also be used with AA batteries. I remember something about the brightness is less running on the AA, but for something around the house when the power it out, it would be plenty bright. The rechargeable battery has a little Micro-USB charge port on it, and is supposed to give you several hours of use on the low brightness setting on the light. Look for something like that, with variable brightness settings on the light itself. I've bought a few from battery junction over the years.
