"You know, at some point, safety just is pure waste," said Rush. "I mean, if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed. Don't get in your car. Don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk/reward question. I think I can do this just as safely by breaking the rules."

In the year he left UC Berkeley, he personally built a Glasair III experimental aircraft

Looks like 3 of the 5 aboard were 50 year old white dudes so he may have had a point....might shoulda tried to diversify a bit and coulda used someone with some sense who woulda said "y'all going to do what???"....instead they had 3 50 year old white dudes and an older and younger Pakistani dude...all like minded individuals who had done a bunch of dangerous shite in order to prevent being bored because their wealth allowed them to live without a care in the world. They certainly weren't a diverse group economically...they weren't diverse in age, only 2 were less than 50 years old and one of those was 49. I would bet a coca cola that the entire operation was staffed by adventure seekers who were more risk tolerant than the average person...a little diversity couldn't have hurt anything.

Yes he is.

As a side note...apparently rescuers are thinking that they are hearing sounds on radar they think is banging on the metal. Who knows.

Would be interesting to learn why this thread was anchored.

Really is sad to think this board censors in this way.

It is not in the nature of conservatives to take un-necessary risks. Explorers and adventurer's are not conservative by nature. At some point you must weigh risks and determine your level of risk tolerance. It is the job of conservatives to temper the dreamer...think about kids trying to fly off a roof with a piece of plywood for wings....if you have a bunch of kids excited about the idea one of them is probably gonna get hurt...add one kid in the mix who is conservative in risk acceptance and that kid is liable to convince the rest they are out of their damned minds...

I fished 135 miles offshore 2 weeks ago. That is a pretty risky undertaking...many people would not do it. You couldn't get me in a submarine headed for the titanic without hitting me in the head...but at least 4 people were willing to pay $250K a head to do so...there ain't NOTHING conservative about that...I also ain't climbing a mountain, jumping out of perfectly good airplane, bungee jumping...but many people do, very few of them are conservative in nature...they do it for the thrill, about as far from conservative as one can get.
