Just because Tennessee is in the SEC doesnt mean you just get handed a super regional for showing up, you actually have to earn it and USM did.

On the broadcast yesterday, the selection committee revealed their criteria which was stadium capacity and hosting city accommodations which they said both teams were equal in their eyes. So to break the tie, they looked at how the teams were seeded coming into the tournament and USM was one of three teams considered for the 16th seed so they gave them the nod.
Both teams can confidently say they earned it but it doesn't matter when the committee is going to select their own arbitrary criteria.
