Two reasons:
1) I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new weed eater right now.
2) I don’t trust the longevity of batteries.

Well we all value our time differently I guess. Personally if I'm looking at spending time and money on an old gas trimmer, I'd probably take a long hard look at a $200 Ego trimmer+battery+charger that I know I won't have to spend a second of time or a single dollar on maintenance for at least 3 years and probably much longer.
