That's easy to answer. It actually creates and sustains more interest through the season to have divisions. Think about when bottom feeders like the NFC South are all still "in it" in week 16 because they are all 6-10.

Also, the NFL plays 17 regular season games against each other, vs 8 (or 9) in the SEC.

I think it should be like the English Premier League and the bottom 4 teams get relegated to a lower conference like the Big 12 or the ACC. Then the top 4 in the Big 10 or whatever it ends up, come to the SEC for the next season.
