quote:
It was a self fulfilling prophesy. Because everyone thought this, everyone pulled their kids out of rec ball. Rec ball is a shell of its former self. If we could go back 15 years, that would not be the case.
Our rec playground, this year has 61 boys age 5-6 signed up to play coach pitch baseball. We had 26 adults sign up to coach... 9 as head coach and 17 as assistant. We formed 5 teams and each team has 4-5 adults out there coaching and working with the kids. These numbers have been consistent the last few years.
Our 7-8 boys program has about 23-25 kids and 3-4 adutls sign up to caoch... this year only 1 as a head coach. We formed two teams and had to beg the 2-3 that signed up as assistant coaches to be a head coach.
So between age 6 and 7, we are losing more than half of our rec kids and the vast majoirty of our volunteer parents.
100 percent of them are going to travel. The number of 7u, 8u, 10u travel ball teams here has exploded.
Our 9/10 numbers are slightly higher than our 7/8 numbers, and our 11/12 numbers are a little higher still.
We have had kids play 5/6 rec, then go to travel at 7, and then come back to rec at 9/10/11/12.
