Correct. That area of the Balkans has always been a cultural mess throughout the centuries. Even ancient Macedonia was considered its own thing outside of the rest of Greece, despite the Hellenic influence.

My grandfather's family was from the Greek Macedonian side of the border and my grandmother's family was from the Slavic Macedonian side. He spoke some Greek and some Macedonian. She spoke Macedonian, and some Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian.
