Probably need to have my new job lined up first before I would file a lawsuit. Also I need to consider whether the couple of thousand dollars we are talking about here is worth burning the bridge with this company.

SO this company does you dirty like this and you are concerned about burning a bridge with them? By all means don't do anything if someone did you like that and you are obviously willing to work for them again then by all means it.
