It is a great idea but I doubt they'd help for a crash during take-off or landing, and I suspect that's when most small, private plane mishaps occur.

I know 2 people I'd fly with in their private plane, both military trained. Wouldn't think of flying with anybody else without knowing a helluva lot about them and their training.

That’s an excellent policy, and you are right, the military trained pilots are usually way better than the rest of us. They never seem to lose that discipline.
