I wonder how much of this is a "new" phenomenon and how much is due to it being easier to catch and prove nowadays with the tech trail that always seems to be left?

I know for a fact this stuff was happening decades ago before I was even in school. I've heard stories, and actually had a teacher confirm it to me (well after she retired). Hell, one of my high school teachers married a former student two years after he graduated when she was ~29 and he was ~20. It was no secret that their relationship began while he was still a student. They're still married to this day with two kids and grandkids.
