It's been a while, but the process used to be to get your load put on Central Dispatch, which is an online board that auto haulers use to find loads. You have the flexibility to say how much you want to pay and see if anyone bites on it. Depends on how often someone takes that route, or if you pay enough, a dedicated hauler will do it for you.
But if you are looking for the cheap route, you are going to want to be added to someone's load that is already taking that route. It took a couple days for someone to accept it, but a car I won in an online auction got picked up by a driver who happened to be coming to New Orleans on a route near my vehicle in Missouri. He was a random driver pulling a car trailer with a Dodge dually. When he bought my load on Central, they gave me his company info and a contact number.
