Ironically, Haggard's biggest flaw was he sometimes came off as "sweet" sounding (again ironically, the same thing he criticized Glen Campbell for), like a conventional crooner. Maybe he felt he had to smooth some of his rough edges for popular success.

That's the reason I would rank Buck Owens higher (if we are in fact ranking today). Even when crooning something like "Together Again" or Dylan's "Love Minus Zero" Buck never lost his inner hillbilly,

Never saw him live...actually had tickets when he passed

So many great songs...my favorites

The big hits...The Bottle Let Me Down...and Fightin Side..

Lesser known hits...Footlights, Things Aren't Funny Anymore, and Kern River

I don't believe the Hag changed his voice but that is how he speaks and sings.
