But it is someone else’s actions. If we’re going to apply it to this case, then what reason do we have for not going after the parents of other’s who commit violent crimes?

Good questions that I wish I had time to get into. Maybe some others want to chime in.

In this case in particular there were clear warning signs of severe mental illness and the parents provided the firearm as gift and without restricted access. That is what I meant by over the top negligence. If you want to read a thorough article of the events surrounding the shooting here is a pretty good one LINK
