Never seen the doc, but they started backpedaling fairly early on. When I was a kid I read something where they talked about "SHA" (the only LS track I like, FWIW). I specifically recall one of them saying the Neil Young reference was a joke. Apparently he later wrote "Powderfinger" for them? (The Beat Farmers cover of that is great).

Several decades after "Okie From Muskogee", Merle Haggard claimed it too was a joke, actually a satirical attack on "The Silent Majority". Maybe -- or maybe he wanted to get some positive press from the woke media.

either playing to the woke media or that he was an ex-con from California that wasn't scared to partake in any substances legal or otherwise.
